Will You Join Today’s Underground Railroad?

Last week, I had the opportunity to give the closing prayer at Pregnancy Center East’s (PCE) annual fundraising banquet in Cincinnati, OH, where Protecting Black Life’s office is located.

What Do Pregnancy Help Centers Do?

Pregnancy Help Centers (PHCs) offer: free pregnancy testing; free ultrasounds; pregnancy consultations; parenting education; adoption education and referrals; abortion information; post-abortion counseling and a host of other services and resources.

Every day in the U.S., nearly 1,000 Black babies die by abortion and sadly abortion continues to remain the #1 killer of Black Americans. Clearly adding fuel to this fire, Planned Parenthood (the nation’s leading promoter and provider of abortion) intentionally places 79% of their surgical abortion facilities within walking distance of minority neighborhoods. Our nation’s vast network of PHCs are on the front lines of this life-and-death battle.

Pregnancy Help Centers and the Underground Railroad

According to History.com’s Underground Railroad webpage, “The Underground Railroad was neither underground nor a railroad. The Underground Railroad was the term used to describe a network of persons who helped escaped slaves on their way to freedom in the northern states or Canada. It got its name because its activities had to be carried out in secret, using darkness or disguise, and because railway terms were used by those involved with the system to describe how it worked. Various routes were lines, stopping places were called stations, those who aided along the way were conductors and their passengers were known as packages or freight. Those who most actively assisted slaves to escape by way of the ‘railroad’ were members of the free Black community (including former slaves like Harriet Tubman), Northern abolitionists, philanthropists and church leaders like Quaker Thomas Garrett. Harriet Beecher Stowe, famous for her novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin, gained firsthand knowledge of the plight of fugitive slaves through contacts with the Underground Railroad in Cincinnati, Ohio.”

I believe PHCs are to the Pro-Life Movement what the Underground Railroad was to the Abolitionist Movement. Although PHCs do not “use darkness or disguise,” there is a type of under-the-radar method in which they must operate in order to be effective. Quietly and inconspicuously, diligently and compassionately, one day at a time, one woman at a time, one conversation at a time, PHCs rescue babies from probable death to life, much like those in the Underground Railroad helped to usher slaves from bondage to freedom.

Former Owner of Two Abortion Facilities

As I sat at PCE’s banquet, I listened to a compelling, and at times even chilling presentation by my dear friend, Carol Everett. Carol is a former owner of two abortion facilities and openly reveals the death-dealing mindset and strategies of the abortion industry. She even highlights the fact that down through the years, many abortions were performed on women who weren’t even pregnant, eagerly collecting their blood money too.

Carol also shares first-hand knowledge of women dying in abortion chambers. To hear more of her compelling story, I encourage you to purchase a DVD of Facing Life Head-On season 2, episode 16 entitled: “Legal But Not Safe.” In this episode, you’ll hear tragic truths surrounding the abortion-related death of 22-year-old Laura Smith, a young African American woman who comprises a rapidly growing list of ladies who are losing their lives at the hands of abortionists.

Protecting Black Life and Pregnancy Help Centers

Pregnancy Help Centers work hard to get their free, life-affirming resources into the hands of those in the Black community. However, all too often the PHCs benevolence is misunderstood, rudely rejected or completely unknown altogether. Therefore, Protecting Black Life frequently partners with PHCs. We strive to equip PHC staff, volunteers and board members on how to effectively reach the African Americans around them, who are in obvious need of their services. We also help to build bridges of relationships between the Black community and PHCs for the purpose of education, which is successfully helping to reduce abortion and its disproportionate impact within the Black community.

In addition to training, assisting and speaking at PHC functions, Protecting Black Life has developed two new brochures to help communicate our critical message.
TargetedOur new pamphlet entitled: Targeted for Abortion: Planned Parenthood’s Deadly Strategy for Minorities was created specifically for Pregnancy Center Educators. It is intended to serve as a guide to educating minority clients about how Planned Parenthood targets Blacks and Hispanics for abortion and is to be used in conjunction with our new What You Need to Know About Abortion, Planned Parenthood and the Black Community brochure. what_knowOur new brochure entitled: What You Need to Know About Abortion, Planned Parenthood and the Black Community is an informative brochure which explains how abortion is impacting the Black community and uses our solid research to expose Planned Parenthood’s targeting of minority neighborhoods. Although this brochure was developed with minority clients of Pregnancy Help Centers in mind, it can be used by anyone to help share this crucial information with those they come in contact with.
