THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY

October 30, 2009

Recently, I received the latest abortion statistics for the state of Ohio, where Protecting Black Life's office is located, as well as the latest abortion statistics for our Nation as a whole. As I review the numbers found in these reports, I'm reminded of the title of the old western movie The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

The Good
Although abortions occur far too frequently, the 2008 Report on Induced Abortions (released 10/23/09) indicates that in Ohio abortions have reached an all-time low. According to the report 29,613 induced abortions were performed in 2008 compared to 30,859 induced abortions being performed in 2007, indicating a 4 percent decrease. That's good news! Let's continue our peaceful, life-affirming efforts to promote the value of life throughout our state.

2008 Induced Abortions in Ohio Report

THE BAD
On the national scene, the National Vital Statistics Reports, Vol. 58, No. 4, October 14, 2009 indicates that there were 1,206,000 induced abortions performed in 2005 (the latest official tally). This is a decrease from the 1.3 million induced abortions reported in 2003. However, when you think about the 1.2 million babies who lost their lives by abortion in 2005, as well as the mothers, fathers and families suffering from abortion's aftermath, the current outlook is still pretty bad!

THE UGLY
The National Vital Statistics Reports, Vol. 58, No. 4, October 14, 2009 indicates the following ethnically-related induced abortion information (our comparison excludes spontaneous fetal losses):

In the White community in the U.S.:

  • All Pregnancies - 3,329,000
  • Live Births - 2,303,000
  • Induced Abortions - 415,000
  • Percentage of abortions 18% (i.e., For every 100 White babies born alive, there were another 18 White babies who died by abortion)

In the Hispanic community in the U.S.:

  • All Pregnancies - 1,451,000
  • Live Births - 986,000
  • Induced Abortions - 263,000
  • Percentage of abortions 26.6% (i.e., For every 100 Hispanic babies born alive, there were another 27 Hispanic babies who died by abortion)

In the Black community in the U.S.:

  • All Pregnancies - 1,217,000
  • Live Births - 587,000
  • Induced Abortions - 452,000
  • Percentage of abortions 77% (i.e., For every 100 Black babies born alive, there were another 77 Black babies who died by abortion. Said another way, for every 1 Black baby born alive, practically 1 Black baby died by abortion)

There's no two ways about it, what these reports reveal to us is ugly. Think about the brutal reality…100 Black babies born alive…77 Black babies killed by abortion…another 100 Black babies born alive…another 77 Black babies killed by abortion, and so on. Ugly huh?

As you know, a key part of Protecting Black Life's mission is to educate, motivate and activate the Black community in the U.S. on the issue of abortion, with the goal of reducing and eventually eliminating abortion altogether. It is to that end that we are lovingly, persistently and unashamedly exposing the genocidal effects of abortion on the Black community. It's ugly…we have to present it as such, see it as such, and begin to do something about it if this ugliness (i.e., the steady elimination of a people) is ever going to be dealt with.

There is good in the midst of the bad and ugly reality of abortion…it's YOU! You can make a difference. Join us in trumpeting the truth about abortion…join us in helping those who have been impacted by abortion to receive healing and wholeness…join us in helping to turn the bad and the ugly into good. When people are no longer beat down and burdened because of abortion, it's a good thing!
